Happy new year

The good thing about 2008 is that when you accidentally write '2007' on something, the trailing seven can be easily corrected into an eight.

New Blog Software Installed
Tuesday, September 18, 2007, 07:00 PM - General
The latest version of simple PHP blog is now being used. For the most part the upgrade was easy. I notice the comment captcha's are now graphical (instead of an plain text). So hopefully my comments won't be spam-able anymore.

.... the arm's race continues....

Spam bots have once again discovered my blog and have begun spamming with messages about "ring tones" etc... So for now I have closed comments. Maybe a newer version of this blog software will be my next step. In the meantime, just use email, or the contact me page.

Coffee Drip using Canon Rebel XT
Friday, January 5, 2007, 01:05 AM - General
A stop-action photo of something falling into a cup of coffee. Photograph taken using a Canon Rebel XT, 1600 ISO. And a 60mm f2.8 macro lens.

Another pic,

How did I do this? I blasted the scene with lots and lots of light (a 1,000 watt halogen shop lamp, and other lighting, plus the flash) I set the ISO to the highest number. Set lens to manual focus and manually focused on a test object near where I expected the coffee drops to appear. The camera was on a tripod. I have the canon remote control. I used the instant mode for the remote control, which causes the camera to take an immediate picture when the the remote button is pressed. The I dropped a metal magnent into the coffee cup. At the same time I dropped the object, I pressed the remote with the other hand. Eventually I figured out the proper height to drop from.

New Web Design
Saturday, April 29, 2006, 10:41 AM - General
After 9 years with a gross hand-made web design, I finally downloaded a CSS template that fits my style.

The website that had the best collection of free stuff was here:
http://www.oswd.org

I believe I used simplex by maravan

So thank you Maravan!!!

I did tweak the style sheet a little. I made my <HR> seperators more obvious. I also restored the blue and underlined look for URL's. I hate when a website obscures what the links are. I also made the normal text black (instead of a lighter shade).

Anyway, I am really glad to have a "professional" looking website.

Another good thing about these free templates (besides being free), is that the templates are easy to edit with emacs (my main web development tool). A lot of the shit on the web contains gross FrontPage stuff and is hard to edit for folks like me. I also like the fact that most of these templates don't have wierd restrictions (like forcing you to have a lin k to the author or show a special logo for the author).

REVIEW Tomb Raider: Legends
Thursday, April 13, 2006, 04:17 AM - General
It sucks. Lara cannot be controlled. They did not return to the original formula. EIDOS probably doesn't even have a clue what made the original games good. This is just a bizzare First-Person-Shooter. Arrow keys are (like Angel of Darkness) relative to the camera and not lara.

There is no control. The level designers already embedded the control flags on the level to determine what lara will and will not do. Anyway, I am pissed. I miss the old game where left was left and right was right. Oh, an the vine at the beginning of the game looks like shit.

I was duped into thinking they learned their lesson from the previous release (Angel of Crap-ness). But, sadly they didn't. Once they abandoned the awsome "GRID" mechanism for their level design, this game has sucked. The GRID mechanism had so many advantages. For one, there was a contract between the level designer and the player. The level designer did not have to forsee everything that the player might do. He could lay out levels and know more or less what kinds of actions were possible. And the player didn't have to play the game wondering if this ledge, or that overhang was specially tweaked to allow passage.

Instead you end up with a gross less than average FPS.

My conclusion: Retains nothing about the original 5 tomb raider games. (Is as lame as Angel of Darkness, maybe slightly improved)

It looks good, and I would love to explore the worlds they created, but..... controlling my character sucks.

Where's the DATE?
Tuesday, April 11, 2006, 06:17 PM - General
A pet peeve of mine is the lack of dates for information on the web. I was reading an article about CRT's versus LCD displays and nowhere was there a date. I could be reading an article from 2000, or 2006. I couldn't tell. This was a major website too: www.pcreview.com. Pleeeease, why isn't this information readily available????

LCD_vs_CRT

I wouldn't be compaining if this were an isolated occurance, or a obscure website. So, if you're a web designer.... this is an opinion you may wish to heed.
